Minnesota, the North Star State of US relies solely on the trucking industry to haul their goods as per the Diesel Technology Forum.

The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI), a division of the American Trucking Associations (ATA), published the following report on how the trucking industry relates to Minnesota’s economy:

Trucking Drives the Economy

Employment

During 2011, Minnesota's trucking industry provided 120,980 jobs or one out of 18 in the state. Total wages paid for Minnesota's trucking industry exceeded $5.6 billion with an average annual trucking industry salary of $46,068. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) of the US reported that truck drivers, a massive tractor-trailer and light delivery drivers, held 44,460 jobs with a mean annual salary of $37,775 in May 2011.

Small Business Emphasis

During 2012, there existed over small, locally owned 14,550 trucking companies in Minnesota which are served by a wide range of large and small supporting businesses.

Transportation of Essential Products

About 68% of Minnesota communities depend solely on trucks to carry their goods. The state transported 85% of total manufactured tonnage using the trucks in 2010 or 528,529 tons per day.

As an Industry

During 2009, Minnesota's trucking industry paid nearly $680 million in federal and state roadway taxes. The industry paid 33% of all taxes owed by Minnesota motorists, despite trucks traveled only state's 8% of vehicle miles.

Individual Companies

In January 2013, a typical five-axle tractor-semitrailer combination paid $6,253 in state highway use taxes in addition to $8,906 in federal use taxes which were above Minnesota's regular business taxes paid.

Roadway Use

During 2008, the motorists traveled 58 billion miles, and the truckers traveled for 4.4 billion miles in Minnesota's 138,242 miles of public roads.

HVUT is the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax, taxed annually for the period July 1st through June 30th of next year for operating heavy vehicles on public highways at registered gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more.

IFTA is the International Fuel Tax Agreement signed between the 48 states of U.S and 10 Canada Provinces to lessen the burden of the truckers' fuel tax reporting.

The vehicles need proper permits to enter into the jurisdictions other than their base jurisdiction.
